2127147 - Error 3434: Cannot change sortorder or character set - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • Executing sp_configure to change character set and / or sort order fails with error 3434

Error: 3434, Severity: 20, State: 1
Cannot change sortorder. Server shutting down. Restart to continue with sortorder unchanged.

  • And the ASE errorlog showing:

The configuration parameter 'number of open databases' must be at least as large as the number of databases, in order to change the character set or sort order.
Re-start Adaptive Server, use sp_configure to increase 'number of open databases' to at least 27, then re-configure the character set or sort order
