2148667 - Error Message: "Tax Identification Number already exists for an employee"

You are trying to rehire the employee ABC, since he/she previously had a contract which got terminated. You also want to assign a different employee ID than the previous one for this employee. When trying to complete the payroll data of the employee, the error message Tax Identification Number already exists for an employee occurs.

1. Go to the Personnel Administration work center.
2. Select the Regular Tasks view.
3. Click the Hire Employee link.
4. Input the Employee ID as DEF.
5. Input the required employment data (name, address, organizational assignment etc.).
6. Click Finish.
7. Click Complete Payroll Data.
8. Fill in the mandatory values and click Next until you reach the Tax Data tab.
9. Add the Tax Identification Number xxxxxxxxxxx which was previously used for the payroll data of the employee ABC and click Next - the following error message occurs:

Tax Identification Number already exists for an employee.

The Tax Identification Number is unique for each employee, hence cannot be used for more than one employee.

Rehiring the employee is not an option in this case, because the same employee ID will be assigned and you want to assign a different one to the same employee. Still, when hiring a new employee, EITHER the Tax Identification Number OR the Tax Year must be entered. Therefore, the issue can be solved by performing the following steps:

1. Go to the Personnel Administration work center.
2. Select the Employees view.
3. Find the employee ABC and click Edit.
4. Go to the Tax Data tab and select the Basic Tax Data sub-tab.
5. Remove the Tax Identification Number xxxxxxxxxxx.
6. Go to the Tax Year Data sub-tab.
7. Click Add Row.
8. Maintain the Tax Year, validity etc and save the changes.

It will be now possible to assign the same Tax Identification Number xxxxxxxxxxx to the new employee DEF.
