2153635 - Unknown Error occurs when trying to open the context menu

Symptom

You execute a Design Studio application. When trying to open the context menu the error message "Unknown Error" is displayed, along with a particular log ID. The error stack related to this ID contains the following:

Caused by: java.lang.IllegalStateException: Assertion: Switching into Running Mode without initialization
  at com.sap.ip.bi.base.application.display.matrix.impl.MxGridMatrix.setRunning(MxGridMatrix.java:195)
