Symptom
When adding or saving a skill in the Skill Profile portlet, receive an error:
An application error occurred. Please try again later, or copy the below error information and send it to your support group if the issue keeps occurring.

Environment
- SAP SuccessFactors Job Description Manager
- SAP SuccessFactors Job Profile Builder
- SAP SuccessFactors People Profile
Reproducing the Issue
- Log in to SuccessFactors
- Navigate to the Home dropdown > People Profile
- Locate the Skill Profile portlet and experience one of the following:
- Select Add Skill > select skill > Add = receive error
- Select Edit Skills > Add Skill > select skill > Add > Submit = receive error
Cause
- Duplicate skills
- Empty skills
Resolution
Duplicate Skills
For One Impacted Employee
- Navigate to Admin Center > Manage Data
- In the first search, select Skill
- In the second search, select the user you were trying to add the skill for
- The duplicate skill will be listed in both the Rated Skills and Self Report Skills section. Select Take Action > Make Correction
- Under the Self Report Skills section, select the trash bin for the duplicate skill > Save
Multiple Impacted Employees
- Follow the steps in Implementing the Metadata Framework (MDF) - Exporting Object Definitions for the Skill Profile-Rated Skills and Skill Profile-Self Report Skills objects
- Open both files and compare the following fields:
- From the Skill Profile-Rated Skills file, reference columns B (externalCode) and column D (ratedSkills.skill.externalCode)
- Compare Skill Profile-Self Report Skills file, reference columns B (externalCode) and column D (selfReportSkills.skill.externalCode)
- For any duplicated skills for each user, delete the duplicated row in the Skill Profile-Self Report Skills file
Empty Skills
For One Impacted Employee
- Navigate to Admin Center > Manage Data
- In the first search, select Skill Profile
- In the second search, select the user you were trying to add the skill for
- Select Take Action > Make Correction
- Under the Self Report Skills section, select the trash bin for the skill without a name populated> Save
Multiple Impacted Employees
- Follow the steps in Implementing the Metadata Framework (MDF) - Exporting Object Definitions for the Skill Profile-Self Report Skills object
- Open the file and reference column D (selfReportSkills.skill.externalCode)
- Delete any rows with an empty field
