2167674 - JSP compilation fails with "error=193"

When opening an application that is based on JSP pages, a 500 Internal Server Error is shown in the browser with a text similar to:

Application error occurred during the request procession.
Details:
com.sap.engine.services.servlets_jsp.server.exceptions.WebIOException:
Error compiling [/index.jsp] of alias [A] of J2EE application [B].
Exception id: [C]

Where A is equal to the application alias name, and B is equal to the application name.

When looking inside the defaultTrace.trc logs, referenced by the Exception ID on the error fragment above (C), you can find:
