2176120 - How to explain shrink database outputs of sp_helpdb and sysusages - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • After shrinking a database log or data segment by running command 'alter database' with OFF clause
  • The sysusages system table still shows a row for the 'deleted' segment
  • This row shows a negative vdevno value and segmap = 0

     dbid     segmap     vdevno
    ------ ----------- -----------
       25               3            14
       25               4            16
       25               0          -25

  • After shrinking a database 'data' segment, sp_helpdb reports an additional clause 'data only unavailable kbytes':

    name db_size
    ----------- -------------
    shrink_db 10.0 MB

device_fragments size usage created free kbytes
    ------------------------------ ------------- -------------------- ------------------------- ----------------
    s_dat1 5.0 MB data only Jun 3 2015 3:03AM 1724
    s_log1 5.0 MB log only Jun 3 2015 3:03AM not applicable
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
log only free kbytes = 5072, data only unavailable kbytes = 5120

  • What does message 'data only unavailable kbytes' in sp_helpdb mean ?
