2187136 - Unable to Create Geographic Hierarchy in Lumira Desktop

Symptom

  • In Lumira Desktop, after creating a Geographic Hierarchy and adding it to the dimension of a Geographic Chart in the Visualize room, the map is not rendered at all, there's no data point (geo bubbles or choropleth) on the map.

  • In the prepare room, the newly created Geographic Hierarchy does not contain any actual data, only a number of occurrences. (In the screenshot below, the yellow shaded columns are the original data acquired from the data source, red shaded columns are the geographic hierarchy created based on the origninal data)

Environment

  • SAP Lumira Desktop, version 1.27 (or earlier)
  • In this article, the Lumira document is created using the Query Panel Extension. The data we acquired are from a UNX universe built on top of the Sybase IQ 16 "iqdemo" database. The universes uses a JDBC connection to the database.
  • If we acquire the universe data using the native "Universe" panel, the same workflow would work fine, geo hierarchy can be created successfully.

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Open Lumira Desktop, create a new document, select "SAP Universe Query Panel", then log in to the BI Platform and select the universe you'd like to use
  2. Select some geographic dimensions from the universe, such as "Country", "State", or "City", etc.
  3. After the data acquisition completes, in the Visualize room, click on the gear icon next to a geographic dimension and select "Create a Geographic Hierarchy" -> "By Names"
  4. Map the geographical data accordingly, for example, Country = "Country", Region = "State", etc.
  5. Now, create a new geographic chart, add the newly created geo hierarchy to the dimension, and add a measure
  6. You'll notice the map is not rendered, similar to the screenshot above

Cause

The geographic columns from the data source contains trailing spaces. The Query Panel Extension does not strip white spaces, thus causing the problem when creating geographic hierarchy.

Resolution

The fix for this issue will be delivered in Lumira Desktop, version 1.27.1.

WORKAROUND:

This issue can be resolved by trimming the geographic dimensions in the Prepare room. The steps are:

  1. Click on one of the column to highlight it, then in the right sidebar, go to "Trim", select trim on "<space>", check both "Before" and "After", then click "Apply"

  2. Do the same for all the geographic columns that you need to use
  3. Now, you should be able to create the Geographic Hierarchy successfully
