2193877 - NWDS error: "Cannot read component definition. File does not exist" on local filesystem

Symptom

"Check-in" or "Activate" of a Web Dynpro Development Component (DC) in NetWeaver Developer Studio (NWDS) fails. The process fails or hangs for a long time.

The .log file shows the following error as the root cause:

"Failed to read component definition from local file" and "..\_comp\.dcdef (Cannot read component definition. File does not exist"

(Locate the '.log' file from the '.metadata' folder of your workspace. The workspace can be located in NWDS by clicking on the Windows -> Preferences -> Workbench -> Workspace menu.)

Usually this error is associated with this plugin

"..\IDE70\eclipse\plugins\com.sap.tc.ap_2.0.0\..",

which is a standard NWDS plugin, but it can appear with custom developed DCs as well.
