Symptom

  • What rights are needed for a user to connect with SAP Universe Query Panel?
  • Possible issues and errors:
    • Cannot retrieve list of universes: null
    • Error in the query panel:Unable to initialize the DSL Service Provider. Ensure that the universe has not been removed, that you have sufficient rights to access it, and that the BI platform has a valid license
    • Cannot retrieve list of universes: while trying to invoke the method java.util.List.size() of a null object loaded from local variable 'univPath'

Environment

  • SAP Lumira 1.25 and later
  • SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform 4.1 Support Pack 5 and later

Resolution

The following rights are required.

  • Universes Top-Level Security = View
  • Universe User Security = View On Demand
  • Connection User Security = View On Demand
  • Servers Top-level Security = View (new for Lumira Desktop 1.30)

Universes Top-Level Security = View

  1. Start CMC
  2. Choose "Universes" area
  3. Click "Manage | Top Level Security > All Universes"
  4. Click "OK" on the popup
  5. Click "Add Principals"
  6. Select the desired Users and Groups
  7. Click "Add and Assign Security"
  8. Add “View” to "Assigned Access Levels"
  9. Click "OK"
  10. Click "Close"

Universe User Security = View On Demand

  1. Start CMC
  2. Choose "Universes area"
  3. Browse through folders to the specific Universe
  4. Right-click on the Universe and choose “User Security”
  5. Select user to change and click “Assign Security”
  6. Add “View On Demand” to "Assigned Access Levels"
  7. Click "OK"
  8. Click "Close"

Connection User Security = View On Demand

  1. Start CMC
  2. Choose "Connections" area
  3. Browse through folders to the specific Connection
  4. Right-click on Universe and choose “User Security”
  5. Click “Add Principals”
  6. Select the desired Users and Groups
  7. Click “Add and Assign Security”
  8. Add “View On Demand” to "Assigned Access Levels"
  9. Click "OK"
  10. Click "Close"

Servers Top-level Security = View (new for Lumira Desktop 1.30)

  1. Start CMC
  2. Choose "Servers" area
  3. Choose "Manager | Top Level Security > All Servers"
  4. Click OK on the popup
  5. Click "Add Principals"
  6. Select the desired Users and Groups
  7. Click "Add and Assign Security"
  8. Add “View” to "Assigned Access Levels"
  9. Click "OK"
  10. Click "Close"
