Symptom
- Unable to open report saved in SAP BW.
- Unable to save a report from Crystal Reports to the SAP BW System.
- When attempting to open a report stored on SAP BW in Crystal Reports, it fails with the error:
'An error occured while updating the report's parameter pick lists.
This report requires a repository connection in order to open.'

- SAP Crystal Reports 2013
- SAP Crystal Reports 2016
- SAP Crystal Reports 2020
- SAP BW 7.4
- SAP BW 7.5
Reproducing the Issue
- In Crystal Reports, under the menu "SAP", select "Open Report..."
- Login to an SAP BW system.
- In the window: "Open a Crystal Report from BW", select a report stored on the SAP BW System, and click "Open"
- It then displays the error:
'An error occured while updating the report's parameter pick lists.
This report requires a repository connection in order to open.'
- Click "OK", the report is not opening.
Cause
- The SAP BW Gateway is blocking the communication between Crystal Reports and the SAP BW System.
Resolution
- To resolve this issue, modify the SAP Gateway security to allow Crystal Reports to connect to the SAP BW System.
- To update the SAP Gateway to allow your user, or computer, or external application to connect to the SAP System, contact your SAP BASIS Administrator. For more information see:
