2271107 - How to export Pay Range Foundation Object for value check

Symptom

When trying to determine whether a Pay Range exists for a particular combination of values, it is difficult to determine this quickly via the UI, as you have to search on the Pay Range value, and not the associated data that is used by the system to determine which Pay Rage is being used in Compensation Information calculations for the end users data.

In this article we will look at how to easily export all of the Pay Ranges from the system, so we can easily verify whether a Pay Range with X combination of associated values actually exists in the system or not.

Resolution

The approach here is to run a Foundation Objects Ad Hoc Report on Pay Range, and export all Pay Ranges from the syste. We can then filter on specific value combinations to see whether they exist, and if not, create them to resolve the issue. Below we go step-by-step to create the report and then review the data output.

  1. Navigate to Report Center;
  2. Create a new report by clicking "New";
  3. Select "Table";
  4. Select the "Foundation Objects" domain;
  5. Give the report a sensible name - as you may want to use this report again in the future;

  6. Click "Columns" and "Select Columns";
  7. On the left section scroll down and locate "Pay Range" and select it;
  8. In the middle middle section, flag the "Select All" checkbox;

  9. The following fields can be removed from the selection as they wil not be needed for this exercise: "formatted-start-date", "formatted-end-date", "last-modified-on", "last-modified-by", "created-on", "created-by". Once you are finished, click "Done";
  10. Then, go back to "General Info", save the report and click "Preview" or "Generate" to export the data in the desired format;
  11. Once the report has been downloaded, open it in an editor such as MS Excel or OpenOffice;
  12. Add a filter to the first row (the header row) and filter the association values (usually there will be an onject name followed by "externCode". As per below screenshot, the sample associations in our configuration are "Geo Zone", "Company" and "Pay Grade".

    The filter has been set to Company "ACE_USA" and Pay Grade "GR-20" and the results are the Pay Grades that have this specific combination of Company and Pay Grade.

    Then, in the third association, there are the Geo Zones that have a Pay Range created against them;

  13. As per the above check, there are 2 Pay Ranges for the combination Geo Zone "NA_EAST", Company "ACE_USA" and Pay Grade "GR-20". So, in this case, the system would potentially use either....which would not be desired (as the system would not follow a specific logic to choose which one to use). So the incorrect one can be set to InActive;
  14. Pay Range with a particular combination of associated values that does not exist can also be found. This would also explain un-expected calculations for Compa-Ratio or Range Penetration.
