2299543 - Why simple select sql via dbisql command line OR interactive version makes alter table sql on same table in some other session block or fail ?

Symptom

  • Following symptoms may be observed in SAP HANA NLS solution, which uses SAP IQ as the NLS storage.
IQ DBA team monitors IQ archived table by selecting table data using dbisql before DAP runs.
Archiving team runs DAP ( Data Archiving Process ) which exports data from HANA, alters IQ table to add a new partition, loads data into new IQ table partition.

  • IQ DBA team selects data from IQ archived table in dbisql. This select may block DAP since alter command on IQ table gets blocked.
Same select may also block same alter command on IQ table from different client process like isql or another dbisql. So DAP is a victim.

  • These symptoms will not occur if IQ DBA team selects data from archived IQ table using isql before DAP runs.
