It is possible to route workflows along the position hierarchy, similar to routing workflows along the reporting line (“role”).

This is particularly useful for position workflows, so that an incumbent of an upper position can become approver of a change or creation of a position

Steps to follow :

New option Position Relationship in “Approver Type” and new option Position in “Relationship to Approver”. You can then select position, upper position, upper position or any upper position in a job relationship.
