2359659 - Timeslice error with 'incorrect' value indicating OS issue - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • SAP ASE is reporting timeslice where the value reported is greater than the 'CPU grace time' value
  • As a result ASE may become unresponsive and require a reboot

  • The timeslice can be reported with a wide range of funtions is 'address' line of the log
    • Most commonly these are not ASE but OS and I/O related calls like 'send' , 'write' , 'xstat64' but many others are possible.
    • This is just one example

kernel  timeslice -2026, current process infected at 0x383120ecdc (send+0x6c)

kernel  timeslice error: spid 606 exhausted its 'time slice' of 100 milliseconds and additional 'cpu grace time' of 1500 ticks (150000 milliseconds). It has been marked for termination.
kernel  This Adaptive Server process has had 6706 major and 6491105 minor page faults since boot.
Warning: The internal timer is not progressing. If this message is generated multiple times, report to SAP Technical Support and restart the server (alarminterval=-1110).

  • The timeslice may show a full stack trace or, more rarely, message stop after the 'Warning' line.
