Symptom
How to add a custom field/column of a certain data type, for example, data type numeric?
Environment
SAP SuccessFactors Learning
Resolution
By default all custom fields are created as type String and their data type cannot be changed.
However, starting from 2H 2025 system version we support the creation of Integer and Decimal Custom fields for the User Entity only.
- We've introduced the Data Type field when creating or editing custom fields from System Administration > Custom Fields > Users:
- You can choose String (default selection), Integer, or Decimal as the data type.
- NOTE:
- reference values aren't supported for Integer and Decimal custom fields
- this enhancement applies only to custom fields added for the User entity
- the default 15 user custom fields are predefined as String and their data type cannot be changed
For Custom Fields on any other entity types, selecting or changing data type is not possible. You can make them Referenced to control the potential input values.
For creating custom fields, follow the steps below:
- Navigate to System Administration > Custom Fields
- Select the type of record for creating a Custom Field (User, Class, Item, etc.)
- Click 'Add New'
- Fill the 'Column Number' and 'Label' for the new custom column
- If you are creating a User Custom Field, select Data Type from the dropdown
- Select the 'Referenced' checkbox if needed and available
- If the checkbox is checked, the custom column will be referenced
- Leaving unchecked, the custom column is created as free text
- Hit the 'Add' button
For Referenced Custom Columns, you can edit it and add references to it (which are the values available to be selected for the Referenced Custom Column). For defining the reference values, you will need to provide a Reference ID and a Description.
