Symptom

  • Running query against a monitoring (monXxxx / MDA) table
  • ASE errorlog reports a timeslice at mon_snapshotSetCounter
  • While holding the 'Monitor spinlock', causing the ASE server to crash
  • Errorlog entries include (offsets will vary across platform and version) :
timeslice -1234, current process infected at 0x14440d4 (mon_snapshotSetCounter+0xad)
Spinlocks held by kpid 1234567
Spinlock Monitor spinlock at address ....

followed by a stack trace including functions :

(null)
plgrabstats

dbcc_monitor
exec_dbcc
