Reproducing the Issue
When you define a field or background-element in the Candidate Profile template, you might also correlate it to an Employee Profile standard-element field. This is the purpose of sm-mapping.
The userinfo-element fields on the Succession Data Model are not supported in sm-mapping.
Please check whether you are checking the Employee Central page or the Employee Profile Page.

The Sync will happen only from the Employee Profile page and not from Employee Central pages.
Please verify the sm-mapping is there for the fields expected to be synced between Employee Profile and Candidate profile in the Candidate profile template.
Please make sure that you are checking the Employee Profile fields to verify the sync.
Many times we see confusion between the Employee Profile and Employee Central fields and assumptions that the sync is not working, but the sync only happens with the Employee profile page. If the value is coming from HRIS field, be sure that this field is being mapped to standard element so data can sync in Employee Profile side.
