2391575 - SHUTDOWN WITH NOWAIT hangs with repeating alarm messages - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • A "shutdown with nowait" hangs intermittently.
  • There are no user processes
  • There are multiple threaded mode engines.
  • One engine is online with status ENG_ONLINE all other engines are offline. 
  • An ASE log snippet shows an alarm message every 10 mins if ASE is not killed. 
  • No indication from the log that ASE is trying to cleanup the Blocking call queue and do a license check-in.
  • The error log contains a message sequence similar to the following:
     
    03:02:01.23 server  Shutdown started by user 'sa'. SQL text: shutdown with nowait
    03:02:01.23 server  Shutdown with nowait detected - ASE process level execution bindings will be cleared on startup.
    03:02:01.23 server  ASE shutdown by request.
    03:02:01.23 kernel  ueshutdown: exiting
    03:02:01.23 kernel  Main thread performing final shutdown.
    03:02:01.24 kernel  Unable to insert task into scheduler as the scheduler has already shutdown.
    03:02:17.01 kernel  Unable to insert task into scheduler as the scheduler has already shutdown.
    <message snippet>
    03:03:04.17 kernel  Warning: The internal timer is not progressing. If this message is generated multiple times, report to SAP Technical Support and restart the server (alarminterval=-627).
    03:13:26.57 kernel  Warning: The internal timer is not progressing. If this message is generated multiple times, report to SAP Technical Support and restart the server (alarminterval=-6627).
    03:23:26.57 kernel  Warning: The internal timer is not progressing. If this message is generated multiple times, report to SAP Technical Support and restart the server (alarminterval=-12627).
    03:33:26.58 kernel  Warning: The internal timer is not progressing. If this message is generated multiple times, report to SAP Technical Support and restart the server (alarminterval=-18627).
    03:43:26.58 kernel  Warning: The internal timer is not progressing. If this message is generated multiple times, report to SAP Technical Support and restart the server (alarminterval=-24627).
