Environment
SAP SuccessFactors HXM Suite
Resolution
- A Soft purge is when the user is still existing at the Database level. More details on Soft Purging users using old legacy purge see KBA 2088065 - Data Retention Management - Purge Data - Platform
- You cannot re-active users who have been permanently purged using the permanent purge feature see KBA 2392076 - User Permanent Purge feature
Note: Please Export and back up your Employee export file or UDF file into your Desktop (Will Be used as a Backup) before any Purge action ( Soft or Hard )
Q) How to activate a purged User?
In order to re-activate a purged user, do the following:
- Navigate to Admin Center > Import Employee Data
- Select the action you want to perform: Import data
- click on: more options button
- Select "Re-activate purged users" from the more options button.
- Select "Process inactive Employees".
- Choose your import file with the user details (the same userID as what was soft purged must be used otherwise a new user will be created instead of reactivating the soft purged user)
- Submit the job, the purged user will be re-activated.
- When a purged user is re-activated, the user is restored with the same userID as before they were purged. No other employee data will be re-activated.
- Update the re-activated user to "Active" as they will be re-activated by default to "inactive"
Note: If you require a report of soft purged users in the system please review reference KBA 3058601 - How To Check Soft Purge or (Hard or Permanent Purged ) Users - SAP for Me.
FAQ - Additional Information
Q) Where can I get information on this from the Guide?
A) Guide: Implementing and Managing Data Protection and Privacy > Chapter: Termination Date Between Employee Central and Standard User Fields
Q) Can I restore User Data after User purge Reactivation?
A)
-
After reactivation, the user profile will show only the User ID and Username.
-
All other user data (such as job info, personal info, and employment details) will be blank.

If you did not back up the user data prior to the soft purge, that data cannot be restored.
- If you have run a hard purge (aka permanent purge) to this user, so all user data is completely removed. You cannot re-activate it.
📌 Note: We highly recommend to run a report to backup all records before purging any user: An example would be an > "Adhoc Report" report > Select sub domain: Person and Employment Export
