2393242 - SYSAM Invalid hostid OEM-ID=SAP, which may raise error 1601 - SAP ASE for BS

Symptom

  • ASE no longer recognizes the license for ASE Enterprise Edition for SAP Business Applications
  • As a result ASE may not start, shutdown unexpectedly or start with a different license which can cause error 1601
  1. ASE errorlog shows messages including an incorrect hostid "OEM-ID=SAP":

SySAM: The hostid of this system does not match the hostid
    SySAM: License hostid:        OEM-ID=SAP

Sample of full sequence in ASE log

SySAM: Failed to obtain license(s) for ASE_CORE feature from license file(s) or server(s).
SySAM: Invalid host. The hostid of this system does not match the hostid specified in the license file. Unserved licenses can only be used on the host for which the license was generated. If the license is intended for use on this machine then you need to check-in the license and regenerate it using the host id for this machine.
SySAM: The hostid of this system does not match the hostid
SySAM: specified in the license file.
    SySAM: License feature name: ASE_CORE
    SySAM: License hostid: OEM-ID=SAP
    SySAM: License search path: /sybase/<SID>/SYSAM-2_0/licenses/SYBASE.lic:
    SySAM: FlexNet Licensing error:-9,57

  2. If ASE starts with a different license, it can revert to the default Developer license that is present in ASE installations

  • When a Developer license is used, it limits the 'number of user connections' to 25
  • This then results in ASE errorlog reporting error 1601 when too many connections are received

    Error: 1601, Severity: 17, State: 7
There are not enough 'user connections' available to start a new process.
Retry when there are fewer active users, or ask your System Administrator to reconfigure ASE with more user connections.
