2425018 - SAPCAR: error reading from xxx (error 5) - Error in SWPM step 'extractSUM'

Symptom

During the installation of an SAP system using Software Provisioning Manager tool (SWPM) using parameter SAPINST_STACK_XML=<stack>.XML, the tool fails with the following error:

ERROR <date> <time>
Execution of the command "/tmp/sapinst_exe.xx.xxx/SAPCAR -x -v -i -R /usr/sap/<SID> -f <download directory>," finished with return code 5. Output:
SAPCAR: error reading from /usr/sap/GTD/download (error 5).
