2435001 - Upgrade hits FatalInstallException: Open Client: FAILED - SAP ASE

Symptom

Upgrading ASE returns the following error:

Install Merge Module: /tmp/ebf26670/archives/open_client_mm/open_client.iam.zip                         
Status: ERROR
Custom Action: com.sybase.ia.common.InstallMergeModuleStatus                                                           
Status: FATAL ERROR
Additional Notes: FATAL ERROR -     class com.sybase.ia.common.InstallMergeModuleStatus FatalInstallException:
Open Client: FAILED.  See log file /opt/sybase/log/open_client.log for detail.
Status: ERROR                                                                                                                                                                
Additional Notes: ERROR -The installation failed.
