2437594 - Server may hang up at the time of shut-down - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • ASE runs with multiple engines in threaded kernel mode.
  • When shutting down ASE by either shutdown or shutdown with nowait command, ASE shows the following messages and hangs up.

Shutdown started by user 'sa'. SQL text: shutdown
XP Server stopped successfully.
ASE shutdown by request.
ueshutdown: exiting
Main thread performing final shutdown.
Unable to insert task into scheduler as the scheduler has already shutdown.
Warning: The internal timer is not progressing. If this message is generated multiple times, report to Sybase Technical Support and restart the server (alarminterval=-xxx).

  • Running an OS command such as pstack to get a stack trace against the hanging ASE process may show the following output.

  • Prior to this problem occurring, ASE always shows the following messages during start-up.

Thread n (LWP n) of Threadpool syb_default_pool online as engine n
Cannot allocate shared memory as 'max memory' limit of 'nnnnnnn' pages has been reached. Please increase configuration parameter 'max memory' to allow additional shared memory allocation. Total physical memory allocated so far 'nnnnnnn' pages.
No memory for Network Buffers bucket pool growth (nnnnnnn bytes)
ks_falloc: Cannot allocate using ubfalloc(rnetmempool, nnnn).
Initialization of RSA algorithm for network password encryption failed, algorithm is not available for password encryption.
