2440316 - Can't open a connection to site 'SYB_BACKUP' - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • A backup fails with with a message including "Can't open a connection to site 'SYB_BACKUP'"
  • This error can be seen in different ways in log and returned to client
    • And with additional accompanying messages in ASE and/or Backup Server log

  • Typical examples include:

    • Can't open a connection to site 'SYB_BACKUP'. See the error log file in the ASE boot directory.
      Could not establish communication with Backup Server 'SYB_BACKUP'. Please make sure that there is an entry in Sysservers for this server, and that the correct server is running.

    • Msg 7210, Level 18, State 1:
      Server 'ASE', Line 1:
      Can't open a connection to site 'SYB_BACKUP' because 'set up channel' message could not be sent.

  • Further ASE log messages can show

    • nconnect: connect, Can't assign requested address

    • Can't open a connection to site 'SYB_BACKUP' because 'set up channel' message could not be sent.

  • Backup Server log message can show

    Open Server Error: 16219.10.0: A call to srv__waitfor_read() was interrupted by an attention
    Open Server Session Fatal Error: 16310.15.0: srv__read_tokenparams: Fatal error while Reading PARAMS TDS for spid: 26
