2440982 - Incorrect Manager Determination in Organizational Management

Symptom

When setting up the Org Structure for your Organization, you observe below issues in Employees view in Personnel Administration work center.

  • Issue 1: Incorrect Manager for the Employees
  • Issue 2: Incorrect Manager for Manager

Environment

SAP Business ByDesign

Resolution

Issue 1: Incorrect Manager for Employees

The Manager assignment is based on the Reporting Line Unit, and if you assign an Employee to an Org Unit, which is not a Reporting Line Unit, then the system will find the next higher level Reporting Line Unit, and the respective Manager will be assigned as Manager to this Employee. If no other Org Units are marked as Reporting Line Unit, then Manager field will be blank for this Employee.

(Reporting Line Unit: This defines an Org Unit part of Reporting Line. The Manager assigned to this Org Unit is considered as Reporting Line Manager for approval tasks. No flag indicates that an assigned Manager is treated as a Functional Manager.)

Issue 2: Incorrect Manager for Manager

Scenario a) with above Reporting Line Unit:

-          Root Org Unit XYZ (where XYZ represents the Org Unit ID) is Reporting Line Unit

-          Child Org Unit ABC (where ABC represents the Org Unit ID) is Reporting Line Unit

    • Employee DEF (where DEF represents the Employee ID) as assigned as Manager to ABC

In this case, the Manager of DEF is DEF. This is the expected system behavior. If this shall not happen, you may e.g. consider the below options:

  • Assign DEF as Employee to a Reporting Line Unit like XYZ or
  • Remove the Reporting Line Unit flag for unit ABC

Scenario b) without above Reporting Line Unit:

-          Root Org Unit XYZ (where XYZ represents the Org Unit ID) is not a Reporting Line Unit

-          Child Org Unit ABC (where ABC represents the Org Unit ID) is Reporting Line Unit

    • Employee DEF (where DEF represents the Employee ID) as assigned as Manager to ABC

In cases, where an Employee is also Manager of the same Org Unit in which he/she is hired, and no above Reporting Line Unit exists, then the system will pick the previous Manager. If no previous Manager exists, then the Manager field will be blank. If this shall not happen, you may e.g. consider the below options:

  • Add the reporting line unit flag for unit XYZ
  • Assign DEF as Employee to a Reporting Line Unit with another Manager
