2464881 - BPM mail notifications not being sent due to AuthenticationFailedException

Symptom

BPM mail notifications are not being sent to the users.

Because of this, users are unable to receive notifications for their BPM tasks.

When checking the default trace messages (see KBA 1596214) from when a BPM task is created (and no e-mail received), the following exception appears:

start(Action, ITaskInstance):Could not send notification for task <bpm_task_id> with role <role> and locale <locale>: com.sap.bpem.base.mail.MailException: Cannot send e-mail because the e-mail session cannot be retrieved
at com.sap.bpem.base.mail.Send.initializeSession(Send.java:67)
...
at com.sap.engine.core.thread.impl3.SingleThread.run(SingleThread.java:299)
Caused by: javax.mail.AuthenticationFailedException
at javax.mail.Service.connect(Service.java:319)
at javax.mail.Service.connect(Service.java:169)
at javax.mail.Service.connect(Service.java:189)
at com.sap.bpem.base.mail.Send.initializeSession(Send.java:57)
... 92 more

The BPM task is correctly created and is displayed for the user if accessing an inbox application (UWL, BPM Inbox, etc.). The only problem is that the notification is not received by the users.
