2464899 - startdb fails with ORA-65090: operation only allowed in a container database

Symptom

  • While starting the application server, the startdb script fails in connecting to the Oracle database
  • The file startdb.log shows messages similar to the following:

check if Oracle processes are running
check_db_running: check finished with return code: 1
Database is a pluggable database
---
starting database
---
Connected.
ORA-01081: cannot start already-running ORACLE - shut it down first
  alter pluggable database <SID> open read write
*
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-65090: operation only allowed in a container database
---
  • The Oracle database is not a container database
  • .dbenv_<hostname>.sh script is setting the variable ORA_PDB_NAME
