2469429 - The system cannot find the file specified - MAIN_PROFEND/MERGEPROF_REGSRV

You get the following error in phase MAIN_PROFEND/MERGEPROF_REGSRV during an upgrade:

Last error code set:
File '\sapmnt\<SID>\SYS\profile\<SID>_<Instance>_<hostname>' does not exist: The system cannot find the file specified.

The profile missing can be for any of the Application servers of this server. You copy the backup of profile you have to the directory and repeat phase, but SUM deletes it and throws the error once again. This happens on a Windows/NT host only.
