2519857 - SAP system cannot be managed, sapstartsrv process hanging

Symptom

  • SAP start service (sapstartsrv) is hanging. No system start, stop, restart, monitoring is possible.
  • sapcontrol -nr <instance nr> -function <function> command won't work, no output is displayed in terminal window.
  • By using SAP Snap-In for Microsoft Management Console (SAP MMC), SAP Management Console (SAP MC) or other tools like SAP NetWeaver Administrator (SAP NWA) or sapcontrol, you cannot monitor the status of system. 

In /var/log/messages error messages appear, similar to following:

  • sapuxuserchk: pam_unix_auth(sapstartsrv:auth): authentication failure
  • sapuxuserchk: pam_unix(login:auth): authentication failure
