2524410 - null object loaded from local variable 'workspace'

Symptom

While cloning a Git repository in SAP Cloud Platform, the Web IDE shows the error:

"Clone request failed: while trying to invoke the method org.eclipse.orion.server.core.metastore.WorkspaceInfo.getUniqueId() of a null object loaded from local variable 'workspace'"

Web IDE users are authorized from a custom IdP.
