Resolution

CompoundEmployee is an API, so it must navigate down through all navigational fields to maintain its standard logical structure.

This is why the Navigation Field URL for CompoundEmployee API appear longer than fields accessed directly from UI. The image below is an example of Compound Employee API Navigational Fields (example taken from SFAPI Data Dictionary):
