2533354 - Missing field in global info portlet

Symptom

You have configured a new generic field for global info portlet but when you access the personal information and/or dependent information the field does not appear,

  1. You are using country specific information;
  2. the field you have added is a generic field (eg. genericString, genericDate and so on);

Image/data in this KBA is from SAP internal systems, sample data, or demo systems. Any resemblance to real data is purely coincidental.

Environment

Employee Central - Dependents Management

Employee Central - Personal Informationt

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Go to manage business configuration, select the country you want to add the field;
  2. Add the generic field eg genericString17 for Brazil;
  3. Select one employee and check his/her personal data;
  4. See that the global information section appears but the field you have maintained doesn't;

Cause

There might be different causes for this issue but this KBA will explain the two main causes where the majority of the issues reported can be solved.

  1. It was not maintained the permissions for the field;
  2. The field selected is not supported for that specific session;

Resolution

*PERMISSION ISSUE*

The Global Info fields are country specific and are maintained in RBP under the session effective dated fields (see screenshot bellow):

KB1.jpg

Note: Please note that if you are maintaining the  Global Info for the first time you must give permissions not only for the country specific fields but also to the field globalInfo_country (please refer to screenshot bellow).

KB2.jpg

This means that whenever you add a new field ID in global information or even change an existing field ID to another, you need to provide the respective permissions in this session.

*FIELD SELECTED NOT SUPPORTED*

When we talk about generic country specific fields we need to bear in mind that we can't reuse a field that was built for one purpose on another purpose.

To better explain, let's consider the field genericString14 in Brazil. This field was built to store Dependent's Mother's Name in the Dependents session, this means that this field will never be displayed on the global info session for the employee, only for the dependent of this employee.

This information can be found in our implementation handbook named as Employee Central Country Specifics and can be found in our help page here.

*WHAT IS THE BEST PRACTICE WHEN YOU NEED TO CREATE CUSTOM FIELDS IN GLOBAL INFO?*

When you need to create a custom field for global information you must use the fields "custom-xxxxx" these field were built to allow customization and should be used for this purpose. In this case you must bear in mind that the custom fields will be available in both global info sessions (for employee and dependent).
