Symptom
Attempt to open an Excel / CSV file exported from Ad Hoc reports (Online / Offline exports), fails with an error similar to the below one:
Format:
'<Filename>.<extension>' could not be found. Check the spelling of the file name, and verify that the file location is correct. If you are trying to open the file from your list of most recently used files on the File menu, make sure that the file has not been renamed, moved, or deleted.
Environment
SuccessFactors Ad Hoc reports
SuccessFactors Report-Table
Microsoft Windows
Reproducing the Issue
- Create a new Ad Hoc / Report-Table report.
- Choose a few columns and save the report.
- Export the report output:
- Run Online and export using the Excel / CSv options
or - Use the 'Run Offline' option and download the completed output from the 'Scheduled Reports' / 'Jobs' list.
- Open the downloaded report using Microsoft Excel.
Cause
This is due to a limitation in Microsoft Excel.
The total length of the path and the file name, including the file extension has exceeded 218 characters.

Resolution
One or both of the following solutions will be required, as both of them contribute to the path+filename length:
- Rename the report and give it a shorter name.
- Save the report in a location that is closer to a logical partition.
i.e., D:\Reports\report_output.csv
is closer to a logical partition when compared to
D:\Reports\Export\Saved\September\Important\Meeting\report_output.csv
