2563791 - Leading Hierarchy in Position Management Settings

Symptom

  • What are the options available in Leading Hierarchy under Position Management Settings > Hierarchy Adaptation tab?
  • What is the difference between Position Hierarchy and Reporting hierarchy?

Environment

SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central - Position Management

Resolution

We can define a leading hierarchy to reduce the effort involved in keeping the position hierarchy and reporting line hierarchy in sync.

The Leading Hierarchy in Position Management Settings can be either set as Position Hierarchy, Reporting Hierarchy or None.

  • Position Hierarchy: If you change the higher-level position from Position Org Chart or from the Position itself, then the incumbents will be moved and start reporting to the new Position. (Reporting line is updated to respect the position hierarchy. In essence, the higher-level Position's incumbent becomes the manager in the reporting line).
  • Reporting Hierarchy: If you change the reporting line (i.e. a Supervisor change made from MSS UI), then the higher-level position changes in the incumbent's Position as per the reporting hierarchy.

NOTE: The position hierarchy is the leading hierarchy by default. SAP SuccessFactors highly recommends that you keep it this way. Many Position Management features are designed with the assumption that the position hierarchy is the leading one.
