Symptom
- ASE errorlog reports an "infected with signal 11" error in the module ptn_pdes_discard_all() or a storage access violation together with a stack trace:
- on Unix/Linux:
Current process (...) infected with signal 11 (SIGSEGV)
Address 0x0x0000000001b7df3a (ptn_pdes_discard_all+0xa) - on Windows:
Adaptive Server Enterprise system exception (0xc0000005) generated by a storage access violation.
- The stack trace includes the following modules:
ptn_pdes_discard_all
des_scavenge_for
ind__ides_scavenge
ind__ides_grab
ind__ides_install
Note: Samples of complete stack traces are available under Attachments.
- The signal 11 error is preceded by the message :
Increase the config parameter 'number of open indexes' to avoid descriptor reuse. Reuse may result in performance degradation.
- This may be followed by Error 8424 on ASE systems running custom, non-SAP applications:
Error: 8424, Severity: 17, State: 1
Cannot find an available index descriptor for an index. Increase the value of 'number of open indexes'. If sp_configure fails due to lack of index descriptors, edit the configuration file and restart the server.
