What is the difference between the "equals" and the "matches" operators in the assignment profile rules?

• The logic function for both operators is the same, the difference is in the usage.
• There is no field in which both operators are offered as for some fields only the "equals" is offered, mostly for the referenced ones. For others, mostly free text ones, only "matches" is offered.
