2583796 - Use of special characters in password - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • What are valid special characters when setting a password using the create login command and how to set it correctly?
  • Password containing certain single or double quote, set with create login, alter login or sp_password doesn't work.
  • When trying to connect with a new password, ASE returns error:
    Msg 4002, Level 14, State 1:
    Server 'ASE':
    Login failed.
    CT-LIBRARY error: ct_connect(): protocol specific layer: external error: The attempt to connect to the server failed.

  • Setting password with special characters can fail with incorrect syntax error:
    Msg 102, Level 15, State 181:
    Server 'SP02PL07', Line 1:
    Incorrect syntax near xxx
  • When trying to use -P option with special character (*) in isql or bcp command, receive "No match" error.
    isql: No match.
