2584933 - How To: Change the location of Web Application Server logs in BI Platform 4.2+

Symptom

The Web Application Server used for an SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform (BI Platform) deployment will create multiple log files that are specific to the BI Platform.  In some environments, the default locations of these log files may not be ideal.  This article explains how to relocate these files for convenience.

The log files use the extension of .glf like other BI Platform logs and there are two types that are useful when troubleshooting the Web Tier of a BI Platform deployment.  Below is a description of these two types:

Webapp_<application>_trace.<log number>.glf

These are BI web application specific log files.  Some common applications are:  BILaunchpad, CMC, ws (web services), and Mobi (Mobile BI).

The log files are created in folders under the directory specified in the Java variable user.home. On a default installation, the directory that is commonly used is:

C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile

The Application Server, which is Apache Tomcat by default, will create files and folders in this directory.  The folders will use a format of  SBOPWebapp_<application name>_<ip address>_<port>.  For example:

C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\SBOPWebapp_BIlaunchpad_10.10.12.1_8080\

The filenames will have an extension of .glf and will follow the format specified above.   For example:

Webapp_BIlaunchpad_trace.000001.glf

TraceLog_trace.<log number>.glf

These files contain higher level traces for other components deployed to the Application Server.

The default location of these log files is in the Application Servers root directory.  For a default Tomcat installation, these are found in the following directory:

C:\Program Files (x86)\SAP BusinessObjects\tomcat

The filenames will use the above naming convention.  For example:

TraceLog_trace.000001.glf
