2592177 - Crystal Report for Visual Studio WEB application throws an error “Failed to Render Report" when an empty BLOB field is used

Symptom

In a WEB application reporting on a field with an image in it in MS SQL Server ( not tested on any other DB ) using ODBC or OLE DB generates a "Failed to Render Report" error message if the field is empty.

Works in CR DEsigner and a Windows Desk top application.

Environment

Crystal Reports, Developer for Visual Studio SP 21 and SP 22

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Create a report based on a BLOB field in CR Designer.
  2. Add that report to a simple WEB app
  3. Run the app
  4. When rendering the page the message is thrown.

Resolution

This issue has been escalated to R&D for a solution in CR for VS SP 23
