Symptom

  • Application generates an insert using dynamic sql:

  • 820 error reported in ASE error log:

Error: 820, Severity: 21, State: 6
Attempt to dirty non-log buffer BUF=0x0x00002abbb96817d0, MASS=0x0x00002abbb9681500, Buf#=3, page=0x0x00002ab730aab000, dbid=7, Mass vdevno=111, vpage=19108040, Buf lpage=554967243, Mass stat=0x5111008, Buf stat=0x1, size=16384, cid=0 ('default data cache'), Pinned xdes=0x(nil), spid=0 which is in I/O.

  • The following stack is reported:

  • Application hangs due to stack trace and 820 error
  • No phantom processes or locks reported
  • Only way to restart application insert is to restart ASE
