2638471 - Error [Statement "ASSERT" is not defined.] encountered during SUM upgrade

Symptom

After starting Software Update Manager (SUM) tool, the following syntax errors is encountered after completing the TOOLIMP* phases:

Last error code set: RFC system <SID> nr 00 function 'SUBST_START_BATCHJOB' RFC failed with code 3 key SYNTAX_ERROR: Syntax error in program SAPLSUGI

When checking the details of the batch job (using transaction SM37), you find the following:

Function module SUBST_START_REPORT_IN_BATCH
Statement "ASSERT" is not defined. Check your spelling.
