2645986 - DISK RESIZE returns Error 5166 and "dresize: Cannot resize...Invalid argument" - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • The DISK RESIZE command fails with Error 5166 returned to a client:

Msg 5166, Level 16, State 1:
Server 'SID', Line 3:
DISK RESIZE encountered an error while attempting to open/resize the physical file '/sybase/SID/sapdata_1/SID_data_001.dat'.
Please consult the ASE error log (in the ASE boot directory) for more details.

  • The ASE log shows messages:

dresize: Cannot resize /sybase/SID/sapdata_1/SID_data_001.dat. Invalid argument.
basis_dsizecheck: attempt to write page 18446744073709551615 on device '/sybase/SID/sapdata_1/SID_data_001.dat' failed, system error is: Invalid argument

  • The file size for the device on OS level is not in sync with ASE sysdevices (sp_helpdevice) reported values. The OS file size is (much) larger than expected.
