2654268 - 'Asset AAA val.view BBB: Acquisition cost negative' Error Message Upon Complete Scrapping a Fixed Asset

System throws the error message 'Asset AAA val.view BBB: Acquisition cost negative' during the attempt of complete scrapping a fixed asset.

AAA means the fixed asset ID.

BBB means the valuation view ID.

SAP Business ByDesign

1. Go to the Fixed Assets work center.
2. Go to the Fixed Assets view.
3. Search for fixed asset ID AAA.
4. Click Manual Posting > Complete Scrapping.
5. Click Simulate.

Error messages are thrown:

'An error occurred during depreciation calculation for asset AAA'
'Asset AAA val.view BBB: Acquisition cost negative'

One possible cause for the resulting negative acquisition cost is that the asset has been assigned to two set of books with different fiscal year variants, hence for one set of books the acquisition cost happened on current fiscal year while for the other it happened on the last fiscal year.

Example:

Asset AAA is assigned to two set of books: ABC and XYZ.

ABC has fiscal year variant like calendar year (10 - Fiscal Year like Calendar Year)

XYZ has fiscal year variant from October to September (38 - Oct FY-1 to Sep)

Acquisition posting for asset AAA happened on 01-Oct-2017, which falls in current fiscal year for XYZ (01-Oct-2017 to 30-Sep-2018), but last fiscal year for ABC (01-Jan-2018 to 31-Dec-2018).

In this scenario, for fiscal year 2018, the set of books ABC has no acquisition cost and with the depreciation values, the acquisition cost ends up as negative. This will happen when trying to retire the asset.

To overcome this issue and scrap the asset, you can change the Valuation Check Settings for respective valuation view BBB and set of books ABC to 3 - No checks.

Steps to be followed:

1. Go to the Fixed Assets work center.
2. Go to the Fixed Assets view.
3. Search for fixed asset ID AAA.
4. Click Edit > Master Data.
5. Go to the Asset Valuation tab.
6. For valuation view BBB and set of books ABC, under Additional Parameters section change the Valuation Check Settings to 3 - No checks.

After saving the change you should be able to scrap the asset.
