A packaging material type is customized to use number range interval (SPRO: Extended Warehouse Management > Cross-Process Settings > Handling Units > Basics > Define Packaging Material Types).
For the number range object external number range / ranges are set up (SPRO: Extended Warehouse Management > Cross-Process Settings > Handling Units > External Identification > Define Number Range for HU Identification).
You may try to assign such an external interval to the packaging material type (SPRO: Extended Warehouse Management > Cross-Process Settings > Handling Units > External Identification > Assign Number Range Intervals to Packaging Material Types).
It is expected, that when a new HU is created with this packaging material type, system checks the new HU number against the external number range assigned to the packaging material type in customizing. However, it is possible to create new HU with this packaging material type that has a number outside of the specified external number range.
