2707797 - Unknown option: convert_to_mdc during SAP HANA 2.0 update from SPS 02 to SPS 03

Symptom

During an SAP HANA database update, HDBLCM from the installation medium is started with a call option similar to:

./hdblcm --component_root=/usr/sap/HOL/hdblcm_uploads

The update fails immediately with the following output:

Updating components...
Updating SAP HANA Database...
Update of SAP HANA Database components failed.
Update of SAP HANA Database failed

The following entries can be found in /var/tmp/hdblcm.log:

08:31:33.856 - INFO: Output line 1: Wrong usage!
08:31:33.856 - INFO: Output line 2: Unknown option: convert_to_mdc
08:31:33.926 - INFO: Program terminated with exit code 255.
