Symptom
When you try to run a report in the system, the error message Error Reading Data of Datasource - View Element Does Not Exist is displayed and the report is not executed.
Environment
-
SAP Cloud for Customer
- SAP Business ByDesign
Reproducing the Issue
In order to reproduce this issue, you can follow the steps below:
- Go to the Business Analytics Work Center.
- Go to the Design Reports view.
- Search for the affected report and open it.
- Run the report.
- Notice the error message is displayed.
Cause
This error message is experienced in a report whenever an element (characteristic, key figure, extension field) added in the current report view you are trying to execute is inconsistent.
A common case is where an extension field previously used in a report is deleted, but it is not removed from the view. This causes the report to be inconsistent as it does not find the field in its respective data source. Such field can be identified as it will be displayed on the 'Rows & Columns' tab using its ID instead of its name.
Another common scenario is that an extension field was removed from a SAP standard data source, however this data source was used to create a join, and the extension field was added to the join as well.
Resolution
In order to correct this behavior and ensure that the report works correctly, this inconsistent element needs to be removed from the specific view that you are trying to use in the report.
If the inconsistency happens in the data source, the data source needs to be edited (work center Business Analytics, view Design Data Source), and the row with the invalid extension field reference needs to be removed.
