Symptom
The rule about which dimensions will be automatically selected to analyze the target measure in Smart Discovery is not clear in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) :
- After the version data in the model is cleaned and replaced during importing, same dimensions will be selected
- When copying the model including data to a new model, sometimes same dimensions will be selected but sometimes different dimensions will be selected
Environment
- SAP Analytics Cloud 2018.20.1
Reproducing the Issue
- 1Log on to SAC tenant.
- Try to Run a Smart Discovery on the sample model [BestRunJuice_SampleModel] with target measure as [Gross Margin].
=> In the Overview page, the following dimensions will be selected to analyze the target measure: - Bar chart: Analyze Gross Margin by Sales Manager
- Tree Map: Compare the Gross Margin by Sales Manager and Location
- Scatterplot: Identify the association between Discount and Gross Margin by Store
- Go to Browse > Models, and copy the sample model [BestRunJuice_SampleModel] to a new model [BestRunJuice_CopyOriginal].
- Try to Run a Smart Discovery on the copied model with target measure as [Gross Margin] too.
=> In the Overview page, the same dimensions as step 2 are selected to analyze the target measure: - Bar chart: Analyze Gross Margin by Sales Manager
- Tree Map: Compare the Gross Margin by Sales Manager and Location
- Scatterplot: Identify the association between Discount and Gross Margin by Store
- Import Data From file to the copied model [BestRunJuice_CopyOriginal] by selecting Clean and replace selected version data as Import Method in Data Integration dialog.
- Perform step 5 again.
=> In the Overview page, the same dimensions as step 2 are still selected to analyze the target measure: - Bar chart: Analyze Gross Margin by Sales Manager
- Tree Map: Compare the Gross Margin by Sales Manager and Location
- Scatterplot: Identify the association between Discount and Gross Margin by Store
- Copy model [BestRunJuice_CopyOriginal] to a new model [BestRunJuice_CopyImported].
- Try to Run a Smart Discovery on the new copied model [BestRunJuice_CopyImported] with target measure as [Gross Margin] too.
=> In the Overview page, different dimensions will be selected to analyze the target measure: - Bar chart: Analyze Gross Margin by Location
- Tree Map: Compare the Gross Margin by Location and Product
- Scatterplot: Identify the association between Discount and Gross Margin by Store
Cause
- Statistics Service, which is used for Smart Discovery, does not run immediately after updating the model data.
- There is a daily scheduled job to re-generate model statistics on models updated from the previous day.
- Coping the model to another new model will triger the Statistics Service to run.
Resolution
- This is current behavior for Smart Discovery.
