Benefit Claim IDs are alphanumeric post b1811 release. Claim IDs were numeric prior to the release.

The MDF engineering team has changed data type of field "externalCode" in object definition of BenefitEmployeeClaim from Auto Number to String from b1811 onwards. This was done to prevent data corruption in certain scenarios.

It is not possible to change the data type of this field from String to Auto Number or any other data type. There is no plan of reverting the change as it was done for making systems more stable and robust. There is a plan of implementing the same change for BenefitEnrollment object as well in b1902.
