Symptom
The system is showing the wrong Manager for an Employee.
- Situation 1: the Employee X who reports to his Manager Y appears as the Manager of Y, that is, both Employees report eachother.
- Situation 2: the system shows the Manager of Employee X as Y, but Y has been already terminated previously.
- Situation 3: Employee X is org unit manager then Employee Y is made Org Unit Manager for a period of time, then again Employee X is made Org Unit Manager.
(Where X and Y represent the Employees of the specific Org Unit).
Environment
SAP Business ByDesign
Reproducing the Issue
-
Go to Organizational Management work center.
- Select the Organizational Structure view.
- Select the Effective Date.
- Select an Org Unit, which is a Reporting Line Unit.
- Go to the Employees tab.
- Select Employee X.
- Select the Manager.
Cause
Employees cannot be their own Manager.
The organisational hierarchy is used to determine an employee's manager. If no valid active manager is found, then the system uses the best fit logic to determine the last valid manager for an employee.
- Cause 1: If you have two Employees who report to eachother, Employee X was originally assigned as Manager of an Org Unit. Later on, the manager of this Org unit is changed to Employee Y. In this case Y and X swapped roles as Manager of this Org Unit.
- Cause 2: If the system is showing a Manager who has already been terminated, this happens because there are no other Managers available in the organisational hierarchy above this Org Unit after the Manager's termination date.
- Cause 3: It happens because the system picks the best fit logic to choose the responsible manager, here the manager it picks is the last org unit manager as no other Managers are available in the organisational hierarchy above this Org Unit
Resolution
This is expected system behavior.
A manager should be available in the organisational hierarchy above the affected Org Unit.
