2737826 - SAP is going to close its proprietary RFC communication for automated data exchange between Customers & SAP Support Backbone (SAPOSS) by July 2020.

Symptom

SAP Support Backbone Update / Upcoming changes in SAP Service and Support backbone interfaces / How the SAP Support Backbone update affects ABAP systems, SAP Solution Manager systems, and Focused Run for SAP Solution Manager systems

+++ ATTENTION +++

Support of RFC-based connectivity which was kept alive for a few essential functions (EWA, Note Download etc.) as a lifeline for customers running late in their switch to SAP’s updated Support Backbone will be phased out starting July 2020. In particular, the classic RFC destination SAPOSS will go completely offline.

Regarding Note Download, if your system is on release 700 to 731, you have time till 30th Nov, 2020 to switch to HTTPS communication. You can either upgrade or use the Download Service option. Also refer to SAP Note 2923799

If you still have systems connecting to SAP Support backbone using RFC channels, you must now migrate to SAP’s new HTTPS-based Support Backbone infrastructure by following the instructions provided in our Support Backbone Guide and Checklists without further delay.

+++ +++ +++

Although the instructions provided below are still useful for the RFC-based interim solution for Notes Download mentioned above, we strongly recommend that you only stick to the instructions above i.e. in section “+++ Attention +++” and do not follow the explanations below any longer, unless you have very good reason to do so.

Environment

SAP's Support Backbone is the central infrastructure behind SAP Firewalls to provide technical

support to SAP customers. SAP Support Backbone consists of different platforms for different purposes. For example, it provides SAP Note download functionality and SAP EarlyWatch Alert Reports data exchange, among many other processes.

For customers, all ABAP systems connect to SAP Support Backbone. This can be helpful for downloading SAP Notes via SNOTE framework manually.

Additionally, SAP Solution Manager systems and Focused Run for SAP Solution Manager systems connect to SAP Support Backbone to exchange data for various purposes, including support cases, system data for Maintenance Planner, and SAP EarlyWatch Alert data exchange. Other (non-SAP Solution Manager) systems using software component ST-PI and ST-A/PI can also use interfaces to connect to SAP Support Backbone and exchange data such as SAP EarlyWatch Alert data.

SAP Support Backbone has been updated. The legacy infrastructure remains in place to allow a safe transition for SAP customers. To ensure continued connectivity, be sure to switch the communication channel of your ABAP, SAP Solution Manager, or Focused Run for SAP Solution Manager systems to the new infrastructure before January 1, 2020.
